Friday morning 6 am, a cool 7 degrees outside and some rain, where would you prefer to be, in a nice warm bed or training with Guy and Gary at Alexander Gardens? I know where I’d rather be but despite that I am in park training.
After a week where Guy has smashed all the big muscle groups in my legs a strength session is a fairly welcome change. Towards the end of the 5th set of 20 pull-ups, 30 push-ups, 40 sit-ups and 50 squats (some with a kettle bell and a few with Gary on my back), I was thinking how I enjoyed the hill session on Wednesday.
So as I started to awake and warm-up a little, I could remove my beanie, we did a slow jog around the park, followed by a medley of grunts. So then after a quick break my wish about punishing my legs came true, a 5-10 minute interval set of sprints. Feeling warm now I was able to take off my gloves half way through the sprints. By the end of the sprint I had even taken off my hoodie, I was finally getting warm.
Anyone who has trained with Guy will know that in true military style, Guy expects that his orders are carried out to the letter. So when we were 3 seconds late from a drinks break, we got 3 sets of punishment. One minute plank, then squat hold and something called a rocking-chair hold – ouch!!!

This may seem harsh but not as harsh as the punishment handed out by (yes by) the Wednesday night group. This involved Guy doing 37 W-Grunts at the end of the session. I have to say that after about 25 his form did start to suffer and he didn’t kick out with the same enthusiasm he’d started with. If you want to know what to do to get Guy doing punishment, ask someone from the Wednesday night group, they’ll happily share the secret.
BTW – I can dispel the rumour that Gary no-longer comes to BC when it rains, which was started by another BC instructor (names withheld to protect the guilty). It was great to see Gary out in the rain with the recruits, although when he was on my back while I did the squats, I really wished he’d stayed in bed.
Next Saturday there is a special treat after the boxing session. Come and watch Mitch do his 50 grunts, assuming the Wallabies beat the All Blacks in Christchurch this Saturday night. In the unlikely event that this doesn’t happen then it’ll be yours truly proudly doing the 50 grunts...
